According to Dr, Masha Godkin, a professor who works in the Department of Marriage and Family Sciences at Northcentral University, music has the potential to take you from the beta brain wave state to a much deeper alpha state.  This is dependent on the type of music and that not all music will have the same impact.  However, music can stimulate both hemisphere of the brain at the same time and this in fact improves memory and your ability to learn.

When you study do you listen to screeching heavy metal, Hip Hop or do you prefer the classics?  Well according to science you might want to stick to classical music.  There are a few reasons that classical music can help you study, first there are no lyric so it is less distracting.  Music geared towards meditation can also work to improve your concentration and reduce any stress you might have.

Music can affect every system in your body.  It can affect your blood pressure, heart rate and of course the mood that you are in.  When it comes to studying you want to strike a balance, you need music that keeps you stimulated but not singing along at the top of your lungs or playing air guitar.  Don’t rely on Spotify  to create the right tone instead you should create your own playlist.

  • Classical works best: You may not enjoy the symphony but studies show that it increases your productivity and improves your mood making it great to listen to while you study
  • Pay attention to the tempo: Something between 60-70 beats per minute will help you stay awake and retain information
  • Electronic music can work too: Ambient music with no lyrics will actually suffice, so if you’re not really into classical try some new age
  • Turn down the volume: Loud booming beats are great for the club but not so much for studying so turn down your volume.
