Colwell Brothers and Herb Allen tour Northwest

In a tightly scheduled week in September, The Colwell Brothers and Herb Allen continued their “A Song For the World” book tour and support of Up with People and alumni with performances in the Northwest.

On September 18th 175 alumni, family and friends gathered for a wine and cheese reception and show at the Tyee Yacht Club on beautiful Lake Union in Seattle. The evening was hosted by area alumni who generously gave time and resources to make it happen. Up with People president Tommy Spaulding kicked off the program with a brief overview of Up with People’s exciting new structure, which introduced an hour of music and fun, with the Colwells and Allen performing songs from their musical roots and then from around the world. Alumni vocalists and instrumentalists joined them to the delight of their cohorts in the crowd representing casts from the 60s to the 90s. A dozen from the 60s era had flown in from across the country and Canada for a mini reunion.

On September 20th a standing room only public show was held on Vashon Island, across the water from downtown Seattle and the home of Paul Colwell and his wife, Catalina. Five local musicians performed with the Colwells and Allen in the event, a benefit concert for The Vashon Youth Chorus, who sang at the beginning and joined in at the end on “Song For China,” “El Puente,” “What Color Is God’s Skin?” and “Up with People.” No sooner had the show ended than Vashon residents were talking about a repeat performance. $1,200 was raised for the youth chorus.

On September 22nd the troubadours and their party, including author Frank McGee and publisher John Ruffin, traveled to Spokane for a mini show at Auntie’s Book Store, an historical landmark business in the city. The following day they crossed the state line for a public performance in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho. Again a full house welcomed them and, like Vashon, included local talent – The Rainbow Fiddle Kids and violinist Arvid Lundin. Alumni from eastern Washington and North Idaho came, some reconnecting with the program for the first time in decades.

The performance raised $1,700 for Striders, a nonprofit community walking and exercise program for older adults. Striders participants played a vital role in organizing the event. Carol Stobie, Striders Coordinator, commented afterwards, “It was fantastic. I’ve heard nothing but great things from everyone who was there. If Striders doesn’t even make a dime, it was worth the effort for a most enjoyable evening of wonderful music and fun.”

Other Northwest events included a performance for 125 of Herb Allen’s classmates at his 60th high school reunion (Seattle’s mayor honored Herb with a Proclamation!), an appearance on KXLY, the ABC TV station in Spokane and a workshop for the Vashon High School band class.
